As a seasoned Alaskan-based photographer, I relish every opportunity to capture the unique spirit of our great state in the portraits I take. Recently, I had the incredible experience of photographing Makia for her outdoor senior session at a botanical garden! If you’re preparing for your own senior session or planning one for someone special, here are some tips and insights to ensure your day is picture-perfect.
Alaska offers an array of breathtaking backdrops, from towering mountains and serene lakes to rugged coastlines. When preparing for your senior session, think about locations that hold personal significance or showcase your personality.
Tip: Visit your chosen location ahead of time to get acquainted with the terrain, lighting, and possible weather conditions!
The Alaskan summer offers the unique advantage of extensive daylight hours, providing a large window of opportunity for photographers. However, the best times to shoot are during the “Golden Hours”—shortly after sunrise and just before sunset—when the light is soft and flattering. Coordinate with your photographer to schedule your session during these optimal time frames.
Your wardrobe plays a crucial role in the overall aesthetic of your photos. Bring multiple outfit options for variety. Consider layers and accessories that add dimension to your portraits, but remember, less is more! You want to be the focal point, not your clothes! Think neutral, and comfortable, but most importantly something that feels like you!
Alaskan weather can be unpredictable, but embracing the elements can add authenticity and drama to your photos. We were lucky to have clear skies for Makia’s session, but don’t shy away from overcast days—or even light drizzle—as they can provide soft, diffused lighting that eliminates harsh shadows! Friendly tip- Always pack weather-appropriate clothing. A stylish raincoat or an extra-warm blanket can not only keep you comfortable but also serve as props for unique, cozy shots.
Incorporating personal items that represent your interests or achievements can make your senior photos feel more authentic. Bring props that hold personal meaning and add a layer of storytelling to your session. These elements create a narrative and make your photos distinctly yours. Examples: your grad cap, something related to a sport you played, something from a club, etc.
A senior session is more than just a photoshoot; it’s a rite of passage that captures a significant milestone in your life! By choosing a stunning Alaskan locale, preparing thoughtfully, and bringing elements of your personal story into the session, you can ensure that your senior portraits are a cherished memory for years to come. Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, Alaska’s awe-inspiring landscapes provide the perfect canvas to celebrate and capture the essence of your senior year. Just as I did for Makia’s outdoor senior session, I can’t wait to make yours a memorable and magical experience!
