Before I’d ever even picked up a camera, aside from maybe a disposable. I, like many preteens, started my journey in the work force babysitting. Placed conveniently across the cup-de-sac were some family friends with two little girls. The oldest being Brooklyn and then little Madison. I watched the girls about 2-3 times a week for a summer so we got to know each other pretty well. Maybe a mornings filled with cinnamon toast and afternoons with the high school musical gang.
One fine summer day as I was watching the girls, I stepped outside the front door for just a moment. Now, I don’t remember exactly why I stepped out but what I do remember is the door promptly being shut behind me and hearing the click of the lock. Little miss Maddy had locked me out of the house, with the house phone and my cellphone still inside. Oh. My. God. Now this story could have had a much worse ending if I didn’t happen to live across the street, BOLT over there, and beg my mother to come get Maddy to open the door. Maddy eventually did open the door, big blue eyes batting, little blond curls bouncing. It was almost innocent enough for me to forget she LOCKED ME OUT. Almost.
Maddy has since grown up… mostly. She put her nose to the grindstone and is graduating a year early, simply cause she can. Ive watched her bouncing baby curls turn into long luscious locks and she’s turned her mischievous ways into driven accomplishments that make her parents beam with pride. Having seen many of her accomplishments first hand, I can say with certainty this is only the beginning.
